Substance abuse or addiction is a common issue in our society. Current research has found that most people who struggle with substance abuse or addiction have underlying mental health concerns. Alcohol and other drugs are very effective in the temporary relief of emotionally overwhelming events and feelings. The problem with this coping strategy is that continued reliance on alcohol and drugs actually exacerbates one’s psychological and emotional pain. It destroys our motivation for life and drives away the people we care about most.
Therapy for substance abuse and addiction is a challenging and worthwhile endeavor. It also may save your life. Treatment involves empowering you to identify and achieve initial short-term goals that eventually develop into sustained sobriety. Once you have achieved sobriety, we will explore the origins of substance abuse or addiction, while continuing to develop new coping skills to help you maintain your sobriety.
